HBB87204 1/72 A-7E Corsair II
The Vought A-7 Corsair II was designed to replace the earlier A-4 Skyhawk as the US Navy's main strike aircraft. Based on the F-8 Crusader, it entered service in 1965 and although not supersonic was fitted with some advanced avionics for the time which enhanced its navigation and bombing ability compared to other types in service. It could also carry a heavy bomb load for its size and could carry guided bombs and missiles. The USAF also used the A-7 to replace the F-105 while the more complicated F-111 was delayed in service.
The A-7E was the US Navy's version of the A-7D with a licence built Rolls Royce Spey engine, Vulcan cannon and improved radars. In US Service, they were used with good effect in Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Libya and in the first Gulf War of 1991. They were retired by the US Navy after the first Gulf War in favour of the much superior F/A18 Hornet.
